A DC Univerzum iránti rajongásomat 99%-ban Paul Dininek köszönhetem, és ezzel valószínűleg nem vagyok egyedül. Az ő írói zsenialitásának gyümölcse a Batman: A Rajzfilmsorozat, a Superman: A Rajzfilmsorozat, a Batman Beyond, valamint más produkcióknál is besegített, vagy jelen volt, mint producer. Dini egyedülálló módon modernizálta a szuperhős-rajzfilmek világát egy érettebb, felnőttebb hangszínt megütve, miközben ügyelt arra, hogy a végeredmény a fiatalabb generációk számára is fogyasztható legyen. Munkássága máig kiemelkedő jelentőséggel bír, hiszen lefektette azokat az alapokat, amikre a DC animációs univerzum jelenleg is töretlen sikere épül.
Az író a képregényirodalomban is nagyot alkotott. Egy ideig az ő keze alatt futott a Detective Comics, az ő nevéhez fűződik a Heart of Hush, a 2010-es Zatanna sorozat, valamint saját karakterének, Harley Quinnek legjobb sztorijai is. Emellett a nagysikerű Arkham videojátékok első két részének történetét is neki köszönhetjük. Ami viszont egyetlen rajongó polcáról sem hiányozhat, az a Justice League: The World’s Greatest Superheroes, ami a szupersztár illusztrátorral, Alex Rossal készült közös munkájuk egyike.
A World’s Greatest Superheroes különálló történeteket tartalmaz a Liga tagjairól, valamint betekintést kínál a Liga egyik küldetésébe is. A cél kifejezetten az volt, hogy a lehető legjobban megörökítsék a hősök lényének esszenciáját. A Peace on Earth című sztori rávilágít, hogy van amihez még Superman ereje is kevés. A War on Crime elmeséli hogyan próbálja Batman mindkét alteregóját felhasználva jobbá tenni Gotham városát. A Spirit of Truth bemutatja Wonder Woman küzdelmeit a „férfiak világában.” A Liberty and Justice című részben pedig a Liga közös erővel veszi fel a harcot egy veszélyes járvánnyal. Számomra viszont a legemlékezetesebb és legmeghatóbb egyértelműen a Power of Hope című fejezet, amiben Captain Marvel beteg gyerekeknek igyekszik jelenlétével lelki támogatást adni. A World’s Greatest Superheroes meglehetősen idealizált módon ábrázolja a karaktereket, kicsit olyan, mintha a képregény lapjain belül kívánna szobrot emelni nekik.
Alex Ross a világ egyik legjobb képregényillusztrátora. Ha valaki ismeri a munkásságát az tudja, hogy ez egy egyszerű tény, amit aligha befolyásol az ember személyes ízlése. Gyönyörű, realista festményeit utánozhatatlan részletesség jellemzi. A művészt érdemes a közösségi médián is követni, hiszen rendszeresen betekintést nyújt legjobb munkáiba, emellett gyakran tart kiállításokat is. A képregény elvetette a klasszikus szövegbuborékokat, mivel többnyire nem a dialógusokra épül, valamint Ross képeibe is csak belerondítottak volna. Helyette leírás-szerűen az illusztrációkhoz igazították a mondatokat. A készítők ezzel is igyekeztek kihangsúlyozni, hogy amit olvasunk, azok főként a szereplők saját gondolatai.
A puhafedeles verzió helyett arra ösztönöznék mindenkit, hogy ha lehet, a hardcover kiadást válassza. A World’s Greatest Superheroes ugyanis szélesebb, mint a szokványos képregényméret, viszont emiatt nem elég merev, túlságosan hajlékony. Ez főképp a tárolás miatt probléma, ugyanis álló helyzetben könnyedén „összecsuklik” a polcon.
A World’s Greatest Superheroes igazi művészeti alkotás a képregényipar két meghatározó alakjától. Mély, elgondolkodtató, szemet gyönyörködtető. Ha kicsit is közel áll hozzád a DC világa, akkor ezt a darabot érdemes minél előbb beszerezned.
I pretty much owe my love for the DC Universe to Paul Dini, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Batman: The Animated series, Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond are all the results of his genial writing skills, and he also was the producer of several productions. Dini redefined the superhero cartoon genre with a more mature tone, while he also made it watchable for the younger generations. His work is still relevant today, since he created everything that made the DC Animated Universe popular.
Dini also had success in the world of comic books. He was the writer of Detective Comics for a time, he created Heart of Hush, Batman & Robin Adventures, the Zatanna series from 2010 and he’s also responsible for the best stories of his own character, Harley Quinn. He also wrote the story of the first two Arkham videogames, which are still very popular. What fans simply cannot miss is The Justice League: The World’s Greatest Superheroes, which he created alongside with the superstar painter, Alex Ross.
The World’s Greatest Superheroes contains separate stories of the members of the Justice League and also tells one of the team’s missions. The goal was to capture the essence of the characters. Peace on Earth showed that sometimes even the power of Superman is not enough. War on Crime told how Batman tries to make Gotham better using both his alteregos. In Spirit of Truth you can see the struggles of Wonder Woman in the „world of men”. In Liberty and Justice the League took on a dangerous contagion. But for me the most memorable and touching episode was Power of Hope, when Captain Marvel tried to bring joy to sick kids with his presence. The World’s Greatest Superheroes shows it’s characters in a very idealized way, like the creators tried to build a statue for them on the pages of a comic book.
Alex Ross is one of the best comic book illustrators alive. If you know his work you also know that this is a simple fact, that has nothing to do with personal taste. His beautiful, realistic paintings are famous for their insane details. You should also follow the artist on social media, since he always uploads his best works, and he also does exhibitions. The comic discarded the traditional speech bubbles, since it’s mostly not based on dialogues, and they wouldn’t fit to the illustrations. The creators tried to highlight that what you read are mostly the thoughts of the characters.
I’d like to encourage everyone to buy the hardcover copy instead of the softer paperback. The book is wider than current comics, but too soft it's size, not stiff enough. It can be a problem if you want to store it standing on the shelf, because there's a higher chance that it's going to "collapse" without a bookend.
The World’s Greatest Superheroes is a real piece of art. It’s deep, beautiful and makes you think. If you like the world of the DC Universe you should get this one as soon as you can.
