Red Hood and the Outlaws by Scott Lobdell (Rebirth)

Az egykori Robin, aki visszatért a halálból, egy kegyvesztett Amazon és egy félresikerült Superman klón. Ők hárman... a Törvényen Kívüliek!

Jason Todd. Ő volt a második fiatal tehetség, akit Batman kiképzett, hogy magára öltse a Robin jelmezt. De egy sötét napon, egy távoli országban megtörtént a tragédia. Joker kelepcét állított neki, ahonnan nem volt menekvés. A feszítővas lesújtott egyszer, kétszer, háromszor... A fiú teste minden csapás után összerándult, míg végül ki nem lehelte a lelkét. Később Talia Al Ghul, Ra’s Al Ghul lánya feltámasztotta Jasont a Lázár Verem segítségével, melynek erejét használva apja is időről időre meghosszabbítja saját életét.
A történteket azonban senki sem dolgozta fel teljesen. Jason Batmannel való kapcsolata is jelentősen átalakult, Joker tébolyult nevetése pedig még most is ott cseng a fülében...

Red Hood karaktere azóta nem hagy nyugodni, mióta először láttam az Under the Red Hood című animációs filmet, ami azonnal az egyik kedvencem lett. Rengeteg véleményt olvastam/hallottam azóta, miszerint a Red Hood and the Outlaws a Rebirth korszak legjobb képregénye. A magam részéről óvatosan közelítem meg az ilyen kijelentéseket, már csak azért is, mert nem volt alkalmam az összes megjelent Rebirth képregényen átrágni magam. De hogy azok közül, amiket én is elolvastam ez-e a legjobb? IGEN, IGEN és ezredszerre is IGEN!!!

Jason beépül téglaként Black Mask bűnszervezetébe, és elhatározza, hogy belülről romba dönti azt. A küldetés amúgy sem egyszerű, ráadásul Batmannek tett ígérete is megköti a kezét: Az ő városa, az ő szabályai, vagyis öldöklés kizárva. Pedig egyetlen golyóval pontot lehetne tenni az ügy végére...

Na de hogy lett egy főszereplőből három? Bármennyire szeretném elmondani, nem lőhetek le minden részletet. Egy biztos, a történet előrehaladtával egyre nehezebb volt eldöntenem melyik karaktert szeretem legjobban. Jason tökös, de az egyik legjólelkűbb arc a világon. Artemis vérbeli amazon, akit Jasonhoz hasonlóan szintén kísért a múltja. Bizarro pedig, akit eddig is szerettünk, jelentős változáson megy keresztül a történetben, ami után csak még inkább a szívünkhöz nő. Az antihősök legszerencsésebb kombinációjának díjának nyertese a Red Hood and the Outlaws.

Az író Scott Lobdell egyébként a New 52 kezdete óta folyamatosan írja a Red Hood képregényeket, szóval egyáltalán nem idegen neki a karakter. Igaz, a címszereplő akkor még olyan társakat tudhatott maga mellett, mint Arsenal és Starfire. A közönség többségének véleménye alapján egyértelműen a Rebirth sorozat az erősebb, de garantálom, hogy ha egyszer elkezded, az előzményekre legalább annyira kíváncsi leszel, mint a folytatásra.

Dexter Soy illusztrációi nagyon hangulatosak, amik csak még inkább menőbbé teszik a képregényt. A karakterdizájn modern és ütős, a panelek dinamikusak, a sztori és a rajzok sodró lendülete nem engedi, hogy akár csak egy másodpercig is unatkozz. A 3. TPB-ben egyébként az Immortal Hulkért felelős Joe Bennett is beköszön egy rövid időre. 

A Red Hood and the Outlaws zseniális, az egyik legjobb dolog amivel a DC előrukkolt az utóbbi években. Nem tartott soká, míg a személyes toplistámra is felkerült és nehezen hiszem el, hogy a közeljövőben bármi is felül tudná múlni. Próbálkozni persze lehet, de az biztos, hogy az íróknak fel kell kötnie a gatyáját!

Jason Todd. He was the second young talent trained by Batman to put on the mantle of Robin. Then on a dark day, in a far country... the tragedy happened. The Joker set up a trap for him where there was no escape. The crowbar striked... 1... 2... 3 times... The poor boy’s body twitched with every hit, until he moved no more. Later Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul revived Jason in the Lazarus pit, which is often used by Ra’s himself to extend his life. Jason lives, but he has changed, as well as his relationship with Batman. And the Joker’s twisted laugh is still ringing in his ears...

Jason Todd’s character is bugging me since I saw Under the Red Hood for the very first time. I came across many opinions claiming Red Hood and the Outlaws is the best Rebirth title. I’d like to approach this statement with caution, since I haven’t read all Rebirth comics yet. But is it the best among the ones I have read? Yes, yes, yes a thousand times!

Jason becomes a mole in Black Mask’s crime operation to tear it down from the inside. The mission is not easy, especially because his promise to Batman ties his hands: It’s his city, his rules, no killing. Even if a single bullet could solve everything...

But how did we get three protagonists instead of one? As much as I want to tell you, I can’t spoil everything. But I can tell you that once I made progress in the story it was very hard to choose which character I like the most. Jason is so badass, but he also has a good heart. Artemis is a real Amazon, who’s haunted by her past, just as Jason. And I know, we liked Bizarro already, but  after we witnessed the changes in his character we like him even more! The award for the greatest match of antiheroes goes to Red Hood and the Outlaws.

The writer, Scott Lobdell is not unfamiliar with Jason, since he also wrote Red Hood comics during the New 52. However, that time the character was in a different team with Starfire and Arsenal. Though Rebirth is the stronger series according to fan’s opinions, you’ll probably want to discover the prequels as much as the sequels.

Dexter Soy created a great vibe with his illustrations, he made Red Hood and the Outlaws into a really cool comic. The design of the characters is modern, the panels are dynamic, the flow of the drawings and the story leave you no time to get bored. In the 3rd TPB Joe Bennett says hi for a short time, you probably know him from Immortal Hulk.


Red Hood and the Outlaws is brilliant, one of the best stuff DC published in the recent years. It also made it’s way to my personal top list, it’s not going to be easy to surpass this. But feel free to try, dear writers!

The Fantastic Four Omnibus by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby Vol. 1

1961-et írunk. Január 20-án John Fitzgerald Kennedy megkezdte hivatali idejét, mint az Egyesült Államok elnöke. Jurij Gagarin szovjet asztronauta volt az első ember, aki sikeres repülést hajtott végre a világűrben Április 12-én. November 1-én pedig megjelent a Fantasztikus Négyes első száma, ami örökre megváltoztatta a képregényeket.

Az Igazság Ligájának debütálását követően a Marvel alapítója, Martin Goodman megirigyelte a DC Comics sikereit, és megkérte a főszerkesztőként tevékenykedő Stan Lee-t, hogy rukkoljon elő ő is egy képregénnyel, melynek középpontjában egy szuperhőscsapat áll. A kérésnek eleget téve Stan össze is dobta a vázlatokat, lepasszolta őket Jack Kirbynek, aki megcsinálta a rajzokat, végül Stan megírta és helyére illesztette a szövegeket. Ez lett a később elhíresült „Marvel módszer”. Kirby azonban máshogy emlékezett a történtekre, állítása szerint ő rukkolt elő a Fantasztikus Négyes ötletével, Lee csak a dialógusokat adta hozzá később.
A hivatalos álláspont ma az, hogy a sorozat mindkettejük érdeme.

Stan így emlékezett vissza a kezdetekre:

„Minden sarkon azt lehetett olvasni, hogy A Fantasztikus Négyes a világ legjobb képregénymagazinja. Bár a szlogen természetesen tőlem származott, az érzés a rajongóktól ered. Tudtátok, hogy a harmadik számig még nem szerepelt ez a jelmondat? Igazság szerint az első két számig még meglehetősen szerények voltunk. Csak azután került a borítókra, hogy válaszoltunk arra a rengeteg levélre és telefonhívásra. Ekkor jöttünk rá, hogy nem pusztán szórakoztattuk a tömeget, hanem hogy a nép szolgálatában álltunk. Még most is emlékszek a napra, amikor odafordultam a göndör hajú, szivarrágcsáló munkatársamhoz, és azt mondtam: Hé Jackson! Ezt megcsináltuk! Mire ő: Oké, oké! De mi legyen a következő számban?”

Stan a következővel magyarázta a sikert:

„Realizmus! Tudom, hogy ez furán hangzik lángoló, láthatatlan, nyúlékony, vagy olyan hősök esetén, akik fél kézzel széttépnek egy Toyotát. Nézd más szemszögből! Sok szuperhős létezett már a Fantasztikus Négyes előtt is, de semelyiknek nem voltak személyes problémáik, nem kellett aggódniuk a keresetük, az életük miatt, vagy zördültek össze más szuperhősökkel. Egészen a mi kis kvartettünk megjelenéséig! Szóval rendben, lángra tudok lobbanni és repülni a levegőben. De hogy viselkednék ezután a valóságban? Mit mondanék a családomnak, a barátaimnak, ellenségeimnek?”
  
A cikkben a 2018-ban újranyomott Omnibus kiadás első részét vettem szemügyre.
A védőtokon a legelső szám borítója díszeleg, azt eltávolítva pedig letisztult, elegáns fekete könyvet kapunk. Ami egyből feltűnt, hogy a kötés igen jól sikerült. A gerinc kevésbé merev, könnyen nyílik, a vastagság ellenére nem kell ránehezedni a lapokra, hogy teljes képet kapjunk. 

A kötet rengeteg szegmensében tükrözi a ’60-as évek-beli Amerikát, például több ponton is érezhető a hidegháborús hangulat. A Fantasztikus Négyes az eredeti origin sztori szerint a szovjeteket megelőzve próbált az űrbe jutni, így tették ki magukat akaratlanul is a kozmikus sugárzásnak, aminek erejüket köszönhetik. Ami különösen megbolondítja a receptet, hogy a négy főhős merőben eltérő személyiséggel rendelkezik, ami sok esetben a konfliktus forrása. Mr. Fantastic a született vezető, aki ugyanakkor követ el hibákat, Human Torch a vagány tinédzser, Sue egy melegszívű, empatikus hölgy, Thing pedig a tettek embere, aki mindig zsörtölődik valamin. A karakterfejlődés fontos eleme a történetnek, a címszereplők csak komoly nehézségek árán kovácsolódtak igazi csapattá. A sorozat emellett olyan ellenfeleket mutatott be, mint a Skrullok, Doctor Doom, a Vakondember, valamint fontos szerepet játszik Namor Herceg, más néven Sub-Mariner.

Ami viszont igazán naggyá tette a Fantasztikus Négyest, az Stan történetmesélési stílusa, ami derekasan kiállta az idő próbáját. Nyelvezetét tekintve is nagyon egyszerű, szóval ha nem tökéletes az angol tudásod, akkor is érteni fogod a történetet. A sorozat előrehaladtával Lee és Kirby is egyre jobban megismerték saját hőseiket, minden kiadott szám után egyre csak nőtt köztük a kreatív összhang. Emellett igazi csemege, hogy a magazinok végén szereplő rajongói levelek is bekerültek a kötetbe, amitől tényleg olyan érzése támad az embernek, mintha kinyitott volna egy időkapszulát. A poén, hogy a negatív hangvételű leveleket is kiadták, sőt, a szerkesztők abszolút profi módon meg is válaszolták őket, kimondottan vicces ezeket az irományokat olvasni. A készítők viszont azt akarták, hogy az emberek szeressék a Fantasztikus Négyest, ezért nem hagyták figyelmen kívül az emberek véleményét, sőt, olykor teljesítették is a kéréseket. Bizony, más idők voltak! 


Az eredeti Fantastic Four sorozat egy valóságos kincs a múltból, aminek köszönhetően a Marvel Comics azzá vált, amiért ma szeretjük. A silver age korszak egyik legfontosabb darabja, ami ma is legalább annyira élvezetes, mint amikor először kiadták. Mi pedig nem lehetünk elég hálásak, hogy 58 évvel később újra átélhetjük ezeket a nagyszerű történeteket. Stan Lee és Jack Kirby nem túloztak: Ez a világ legjobb képregénymagazinja!

The year is 1961. John Fitzgerald Kennedy became the president of the USA on the 20th of January. On th 12th of April Jurij Gagarin, the soviet astronaut was the first human flying in outer space and came back succesfully. And the first volume of The Fantastic Four was released on the 10th of November. It changed the world of comics forever.

After the debut of the Justice League Martin Goodman envied the success of DC Comics, so he asked his editor in chief, Stan Lee to create a new team of superheroes for Marvel. Stan did the synopsis, handed them over to Jack Kirby, who penciled the characters, back to Lee, who then added the dialogues. This became the later famous „Marvel Method”. However, Kirby remembered hings differently, he claimed that Fantastic Four was his idea, Stan just added the dialogues. Today’s view is that the comic was created by both of them

This is how Stan remembered to the beginning:

„Y’know, the FF has long fratured its world famous banner line on every cormer, proclaiming to be „The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine! The sentiments belonged to fandom, the exclamation point, as usual, was mine! But did you know that it wasn’t till issue number three that we first used that phrase, which is now so dear to culture lovers everywhere? It may surprise you that we were really quite modest and self-effacting after producing first two issues. It was only after faithfully reading your mail and answering all your phone calls (and some of those who called collect!) that we realized we weren’t just providing entertainment for the masses, we were actually performing a public service! Ah yes, I still remember that fateful day, when I turned to my charismatic, curly-haired, cigar-chomping collaborator and said: "Hey Jackson, it looks like we got ourselves a hit!" And he replied: "Okay, Okay. But what’re we gonna do for the next issue?”

Stan also explained their success:

„Realism! Hey, I know that „realism” sounds really silly when talking about super-powered costumed characters, who can stretch like rubber bands, burst into flame, become invisible, and tear apart a Toyota single-handedly. Look at it this way. Their were many, many super heroes merrily cavorting in their colorful little long johns before the FF made the scene. But virtually none of them had personal problems, none had to worry about earning a living, none ever argued or lost his temper with othe super heroes. Not until our captivating little quartet came along. I’d say to myself, okay, so I can make my body become a falming fireball and fly through the air. But given that ability, how would I act in the real world? What would I say to my friends, my family, my enemies? What would I care about, worry about?”

I bought the 2018 reprint of FF Omnibus. On the dust protector you can see the cover of the first issue, removing it you get an elegant black book. The first thing I noticed is that the binding is pretty good, you don’t have to weight down the pages to get the full picture, the spine is also flexible. 

The book represents the ’60s America in many parts, you can feel the cold war vibes for example. In the origin story the FF tried to get to outer space before the soviets, that’s how their cosmic ray accident happened, which gave them their powers. What gives the recipe a twist are the personality of the characters, which are quite different, and often leads to conflicts. Mr. Fantastic is a natural leader, who can still make mistakes. The Human Torch is the cool teenager. Sue is the light-hearted girl member of the team. And the Thing is the grumpy one, who always loses his temper over something. Character development is an important parf of the story, it took a bumpy road for the FF to become a functioning team. The comic introduced villains like Doctor Doom, the Mole Man and the Skrulls from outer space. Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner is also a very important adversary.

What made the FF so succesful was Stan Lee’s storytelling, which passed the test of time very well. The creators got more and more familiar with their own characters, you can literally feel the creative vibes growing with each issue. The fun thing is the magazines fan pages are also in the book, containing letters from the early readers sent to the editors. This really gives you the feel like opening a time capsule. They also printed the negative opinions and answered them the most professional way, reading these letters are hilarious. But the creators wanted people to like the Fantastic Four, so they payed attention to critics, sometimes they even granted their wishes. Times were different then!


The original Fantastic Four is a real gem from the past, one of the most important pieces of the silver age. An absolute game changer, without it Marvel comics would not be what it is today. These stories are still just as enjoyable as on the day they were first printed. We are lucky that we can read these awesome stories 58 years later. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were right. This is the world’s greatest comic magazine! 

Batman by Tom King Vol. 1-7 (Rebirth)

Tom King sajátos perspektívából közelíti meg a Sötét Lovagot, az eredmény pedig az utóbbi idők egyik legmegosztóbb DC képregénysorozata. 

2016-ban a New 52 lezárásával a DC újraindította az összes képregényét, ami a Rebirth korszak kezdetét jelentette. Scott Snydertől a korábban CIA ügynökként tevékenykedő Tom King vette át a tollat, ám sok rajongó nem fogadta túl nagy örömmel a váltást. A gyűlölet végül odáig fajult, hogy Kinget tavaly halálosan megfenyegették, és biztonsági őrök vigyáztak testi épségére a nyári Comic Conon. De mégis mi lehet a baj a sorozattal, hogy ekkora indulatot váltott ki?

A válasz: AZ ÉG VILÁGON SEMMI. 

King egyetlen bűne, hogy olyasmivel próbálkozott, amivel előtte még senki a Batman írók közül, ez pedig a mentális zavarok előtérbe helyezése, és boncolgatása. A rajongók közül sokan nem tudták lenyelni, hogy kedvenc hősüket ilyen érzelmileg meggyötörtnek látják, pedig ha belegondolunk Batman valószínűleg az egyik legdepressziósabb szuperhős, aki valaha szerepelt képregények lapjain. Gyerekkorában a szeme láttára lőtték le a szüleit, amit sosem sikerült feldolgoznia, ezért bosszút esküdött, és úgy éli ki a poszttraumás stresszt, hogy óriási denevérnek öltözve rója a várost, mindezt azért, hogy gyilkos bohócokkal, gengszterekkel és más borzalmakkal küzdjön meg. Mindent hajlandó feláldozni küldetései sikeréért, és mit sem törődik azzal, hogy bármelyik éjszaka az utolsó lehet. Mégis mi ez, ha nem őrület? 

A Batman: Rebirth legfontosabb eleme a Bruce/Selina közötti szerelmi szál, aminek tényleg szappanopera szaga van néha, ugyanakkor nagyon élvezetes. A modern Batman karakterének hajtóereje mindig is a belőle áradó keserűség volt, épp ezért nagyon érdekes fordulat, hogy ezúttal végre magával is törődik, és törekszik a boldogságra.
A sorozatból több részt is ki lehet emelni, de hogy spóroljak a karakterekkel, csak a legemlékezetesebb fejezetekre térek ki. Számomra az első helyen az I am trilógia második és harmadik része áll, melyek az I am Suicide és I am Bane címeket viselik. Mint a címből is kiderül, ezek a fejezetek Banere fókuszálnak, akire már nagyon ráfért egy jó sztori. Szerencsére ezt meg is kaptuk. King egyik legjobb húzása, hogy szembe állítja Batmant és nemezisét, és rámutat, hogy tulajdonképpen nem is különböznek annyira egymástól. A másik kedvencem a War of Jokes and Riddles című epizód, melyben Joker és Riddler egymással vívott háborúja kiolthatatlan futótűzként terjed Gothamben. A humorérzékét vesztett Joker ötlete egyenesen zseniális. Hiszen mit ér a Bűn Bohóc Hercege nevetés nélkül? Az egyetlen gyenge pont idáig a Bride or Burglar TPB, ahol kimondottan érezni, hogy csak a fontosabb események közötti üresjáratot próbálják kitölteni. 

King a tehetséges dramaturgiai érzék mellett kiváló humorral is rendelkezik. Ha épp nem valamelyik esemény sokkhatása alatt állunk, akkor valami egészen abszurd helyzetbe csöppenünk bele, mint például Batman és Robinjai a Bat Burger nevezetű gyorsétteremben, vagy a dupla randi a Superman/Lois Lane párossal. King parádésan figurázza ki a szuperhős élet komikus oldalát, a nevetés garantáltan könnyeket csal az olvasó szemébe.

A sorozat több illusztrátort is maga mellett tudhat, ezekből a legkiemelkedőbb, és legtöbbet foglalkoztatott Mikel Janín, akiről ki merem jelenteni, hogy az egyik legtehetségesebb művész, aki valaha Batman képregényeken dolgozott. A másik említésre méltó David Finch, akinek olyan címek fűződnek a nevéhez, mint a Forever Evil, vagy a Dark Knight New 52 sorozat, ahol nem csak rajzolóként volt jelen, hanem mint író is. Az egyetlen szembetűnő, éles váltást a Rules of Engagement TPB-nél lehet érezni, ahol Joelle Jones ragadott ceruzát.

Tom King Batman szériája jelenleg is tart, a „Rebirth” felirat helyett viszont mostanra már csak a „DC Universe” logó díszeleg a kiadó újabb képregényein. Aki szeretne egy kicsit mélyebb érzelmi töltetű Batman képregényt olvasni, az ne hagyja, hogy befolyásolja az indokolatlan tömeghisztéria. Nem állítom, hogy ez a valaha volt legjobb Batman sorozat, igen, vannak hibái. Rossznak viszont egyáltalán nem lehet nevezni, és tele van jobbnál jobb ötletekkel. Kingnek ugyanis nem az a célja, hogy tönkre tegye a karaktert, hanem hogy új élményt nyújtson az olvasóknak, ezért pedig sokkal inkább tiszteletet érdemel, mintsem gyűlöletet.

In 2016 the New 52 has era ended, and the age of Rebirth comics begun. Former CIA agent, Tom King took the pen from Scott Snyder, but not everyone was happy about the change. The hate led to the death threat of King, who had to go to Comic Con with bodyguards watching his every step. But what’s the problem with this comic, that it caused so much trouble?

The answer is: NOTHING AT ALL. King’s only guilty because he tried something new, that none of the previous Batman writers before him: He pointed out and focused on Batman’s mental illness. Some fans couldn’t take, that they see their beloved hero so emotinally exhausted, but if we think about it, Batman is probably one of the most depressed characters in superhero history. As a kid, he saw his parents got shot in front of him, so he vowed vengeance, and to relieve his PTSD he dresses up as a giant bat, fights killer clowns, mobsters, and other horrors. He’s willing to sacrifice anything for his mission, and he doesn’t care that any night could be the last. If this is not insanity, what is?

The most important part of Batman Rebirth is the romance between Bruce and Selina, which sometimes has the smell of a soap opera, but still quite enjoyable. The essence of modern Batman was always the misery of the character, so it’s an interesting change, that he finally cares about himself and tries to be be happy. The most important highlights of the run are the 2nd and 3rd part of the „I am” trilogy, titled „I am Suicide” and „I am Bane”. As you could guess, these episodes are about Bane. King sets the Dark Knight against his nemesis, and pointed out that they are not that different as we think. The other greatest episode is The War of Jokes and Riddles, where the war between the Joker and the Riddler spreads through the city of Gotham. The idea of the Joker, who lost his sense of humor is brilliant. What is the Clown Prince of Crime without his laugh? The only weak point of the series is the Bride or Burglar TPB, which is clearly a filler between the important events. 

Besides King has a sense for drama, he’s also gifted with great humor. When we are not under shock because of the events, we find ourselves in funny, absurd situations, such as Batman and his Robins in the Batman themed fast food restaurant called „Bat Burger”, or the double date with Superman and Lois. I guarantee, the laughter will bring tears in your eyes.

There are multiple artists working on the series, the most important is Mikel Janín, who is simply one of the best illustrators, who ever worked on Batman comics. The other honorable mention is David Finch, who could be familiar from Forever Evil, or The Dark Knight New 52, series where he also took part as writer. The only part, where the change is noticable is The Rules of Engagement TPB, which was drawn by Joelle Jones.

Tom King’s Batman is still in progress, however, the „Rebirth” logo has been changed simply to „DC Universe” on the publisher’s newer comics. If you want to read a more emotinal Batman story, then don’t let the mass hysteria manipulate you. Sure, the series has it’s flaws, but it’s still very good and it’s full of great ideas. Tom King doesn’t want to ruin the character, he just wants to bring something new for the readers, and he deserves respect for that, not hate.

Transformers: The IDW Collection Phase Two Vol. 1

Gyönyörű hardcover kiadásban a modern Transformers képregények 2. fázisa

Sokáig hezitáltam, mielőtt fejest ugrottam az IDW Alakváltókról szóló gyűjteményébe. Elsőre kicsit túlárazottnak tűnt, ami amúgy nem zavart volna egyetlen hosszabb, önálló képregény esetén, de mivel sorozatról beszélünk tudtam, hogy ha egyszer elkezdem, onnan nem lesz visszaút: Addig nem nyugszom amíg a polcra nem kerül a teljes széria.
A csomag megérkezése után viszont hamar meggyőződtem róla, hogy jó vásárt csináltam. 

Először is, minden túlzás nélkül ki merem jelenteni, hogy ez az egyik legszebb, legigényesebben összerakott hardcover, amit életemben láttam. A borító olyan masszív, hogy az a cybertroni háborút is túlélné. A legtöbb képregényemmel ellentétben ezt halál lazán be merném dobni egy táskába és hurcibálnám magammal egész nap, egyszerűen kizárt, hogy baja essen. Az illesztés hibátlan, a fekete selyemszalag könyvjelző páratlan eleganciát sugároz. Egyszerűen csúcsminőség. A gyűjtemény dimenzióiban is nagyobb, mint a hagyományos current size kiadások, de nincs túlméretezve sem. 

Ami viszont végleg meggyőzött, az a tartalom mennyisége. Az árért cserébe elsőre kevésnek tűnt a 290 oldal, de elég sokáig tartott átrágni magam rajta. Néhány tapasztaltabb vélemény alapján a Phase 2 szériával kezdtem. Az első volume tartalmazza a Death of Optimus Prime című one shotot, a More Than Meets The Eye számait 1–5-ig, valamint a Robots in Disguise sorozatot 1–6-ig. 

A sztori a Cybertront szétszakító polgárháború után játszódik. Az előzmények hiányában kicsit nehezebb volt felzárkóznom, de mikor nagyjából sikerült teljesen beszippantott a hangulat. Az IDW legjobb húzása, hogy teljesen kukázták az elavult „az Autobotok a jók, az Álcák pedig a rosszak” koncepciót, és megmutatták, hogy a köztük kialakult konfliktus sokkal bonyolultabb ennél. A „more than meets the eye” szlogen még sosem volt ennyire aktuális. Az Álcáknak is megvannak a saját morális értékeik, és a vágy, hogy azt tegyék, amit helyesnek vélnek. Az Autobotok pedig legalább olyan könyörtelenek tudnak lenni, mint ellenségeik, ha hatalmuk és a rend fenntartásáról van szó. A Transformerek idejétmúlt fekete-fehér világának eltörlésével lehetőség nyílt sokkal felnőttebb, modernebb történetek elmesélésére.

A fontosabb szereplők javát már jól ismerjük a ’80-as évek ikonikus G1 tévésorozatából, ami a mai napig az első helyet foglalja el a rajongók szívében. Nem véletlen, hogy a karakterdizájn is ezt veszi alapul. Ha Michael Bay is kicsit jobban odafigyelt volna az ilyen apróságokra a kilógó női testrészek helyett, akkor ma talán nem sorolnák a munkásságát a b kategóriás katasztrófafilmek közé. Ha valaki nincs képben a G1, vagy annak szereplőit illetően, annak kicsit nehezebb lesz megkülönböztetni egymástól a Transformereket, de ez aligha róható fel az alkotóknak, elvégre ezek a képregények a rajongók kemény magjának készültek. 

Az illusztrációk hozzák az elvárt hangulatot, az egyetlen dolog, amit kicsit hiányoltam, hogy nem adják kellően vissza a Transformerek monumentalitását. Ennek egyszerű oka, hogy a Földet nyomokban sem érinti a történet, így nem volt semmi, amihez képest nagyobbnak tűnnének. Ezért hát bármennyire szeretnék valamibe belekötni, sajnos ezt sem tudom felírni a negatívumok listájára.

A Transformers IDW Collectiont valószínűleg hiába ajánlanám a vérbeli fanatikusoknak, mivel ők már biztosan ismerik. Helyette ajánlom inkább mindenki másnak. Azoknak, akiknek tetszettek a mozifilmek, vagy pont hogy azoknak, akiknek nem, de adnának az Alakváltóknak egy újabb esélyt. Azoknak, akik ma is túláradó nosztalgiával gondolnak vissza a G1, vagy más későbbi sorozatokra. Azoknak, akiknek tetszettek a War for Cybertron és a Fall of Cybertron című videojátékok. Garantálom, hogy ez a sorozat nem fog csalódást okozni. 

Modern Transformers comics collected into a beautiful hardcover

I hesitated for a while, before I dived into Transformers IDW Collection. It seemed a bit overpriced at first, that normally I wouldn’t mind in a case of a single comic book. But since we’re talking about a large series I knew if I start, there’s no turning back: I’m not going to stop until there’s every volume on my shelf. Once the package arrived, I realized that I actually made a great deal.

First of all, this is one of the most beautiful, well put together hardcovers I’ve ever seen. The cover itself is so massive, it could survive the war for Cybertron. Unlike most of my comics, I’d dare to throw this book into a bag, and carry all day without fear, damage is impossible. The binding is perfect. The silk ribbon bookmark shows elegance, like no other. It’s simply top quality. The book is also bigger in it’s dimensions, than current size comics.

What convinced me even more, is the amount of content. For the price, 290 pages seemed too short, but it actually took me a while to finish. After the recommendations of some more experienced readers I started with the first volume of Phase 2, which collects the one-shot Death of Optimus Prime, More Than Meets The Eye issues #1–5, and Robots in Disguise issues #1–6. 

The story takes place after the war on Cybertron. Without the prequels it was a bit hard for me to catch up, but once I did I couldn’t stop reading. The greatest thing these IDW comics did was that they completely dumped the old, outdated „the Autobots are the good guys and the Decepticons are evil” concept, and showed us that their conflict is a lot more complicated than that. Or should I say „there’s more than meets the eye”? The Decepticons bave their own moral code and the desire, to do the right thing, and the Autobots can be just as ruthless, as their adversaries, when it comes to maintain their order. By erasing the once black and white world of the Transformers there’s the opportunity to tell modern stories to a more grown up audience. 

We already know the more important characters from the iconic G1 cartoon, which is still number one on every fanatic’s list. It’s no coincidence, that the character design are based on this ’80s classic. If Michael Bay payed more attention on little things like this instead of female bodyparts, then maybe his work were not be viewed as b category disaster movies. If you are not familiar with G1 or it’s characters, then it’s going to be a bit difficult to make difference between the Transformers. But it’s hardly a flaw, since these comics were made for the die hard fans. 

The illustrations deliver the classic Transformers vibe, the only thing I was missing is that they don’t show how monumetal cybertronians can be. The reason behind that is that none of the arcs are set on Earth, so there’s nothing that they seem big compared to. So even if I want to nag about something, I just can’t.

It would be pointless to recommend Transformers IDW Collection to hardcore fanatics, because they probaly know it already. So instead, I recommend it to everyone else. For those, who like the movies, or for those, who expected more from them. For those, who still feel the nostalgia, when they think of G1, or other tv series. For those who liked the War for Cybertron, and Fall of Cybertron videogames. I promise you, this series will not let you down.

Amazing Spider-Man: Back To Basics by Nick Spencer

2018-ban a legtöbb Marvel képregényhez hasonlóan a Csodálatos Pókember is új első számmal jelentkezett a Fresh Start kezdetével.

Dan Slott kitörölhetetlen nyomot hagyott Peter Parker világában. Már csak azért is, mert ez a övé az eddigi leghosszabb Spider-Man sorozat, ami ráadásul több egymást követő címet is magába foglal. A hős mellett töltött évtizedes munkássága alatt épp úgy kijutott hagyományosabb Pókember sztorikból, mint hajmeresztő ötletekből. A Slott korszak azonban hivatalosan is véget ért, és míg ő újabban a Tony Stark: Iron Man, valamint a Fantastic Four képregények megírásán fáradozik, a Pókember képregények fősodrának számító Amazing Spider-Mant Nick Spencer vette át.

A borító láttán rögtön elmosolyodtam, hiszen olyan klasszikus ellenfelek kerültek rá, mint Rhino, Mysterio, Kraven a vadász, valamint Dr. Connors, más néven a Gyíkember. A címadás jelen esetben elég félrevezető, hiszen szó sincs arról, hogy az Amazing Spider-Man visszatérne a megszokott, biztonságot jelentő alapokhoz. Legalábbis nem úgy, ahogy gondolnánk. Helyette inkább fenekestül felforgatja Peter Parker életét. Mármint még a szokásosnál is jobban.

Petert már sok veszteség érte az életben. Elvesztette a szüleit, a nagybátyját és a szerelmét is. Most viszont olyasvalamit vesztett el, ami könnyen derékba törheti a karrierjét. A szakmai megbecsülését és kollégái tiszteletét. Emellett nem csak New York rosszfiúival, hanem saját magával is meg kell küzdenie. Szó szerint! És ha mindez még nem lenne elég, Wilson Fisk, a Vezér lett a város törvényesen megválasztott polgármestere. Mégis mi az ördög folyik itt!?

A Back to Basics sztorija a Dan Slott által írt Superior Spider-Man széria következménye, ami pontosan az olyan hajmeresztő ötletek egyike, mint amikről az első bekezdésben szót ejtettünk. Ebben a sorozatban Pókember egyik legikonikusabb ellensége, Dr. Octopus vette át az irányítást hősünk teste felett, és annak bőrébe bújva kezdte élni Peter Parker életét. Pánikra semmi ok, ha nem olvastad, akkor is érteni fogod mi történik, az aktuális széria meglehetősen barátságosan fogadja az új olvasókat. A képregény minden szükséges információt a rendelkezésedre bocsát anélkül, hogy komolyabban elspoilerezné az előzményeket, így ha kíváncsi vagy azokra, bármikor pótolhatod őket. 

Az új Amazing Spider-Man a friss status quo ellenére vérbeli Pókember sztori. A váratlan, eddig sosem látott fordulatokat kiválóan ellensúlyozza a karakterhűség. Spencer nagyon okosan illesztette bele Slott munkásságába a saját történetét úgy, hogy közben mégis valami egészen eredetit alkotott. A sorozat az elődökhöz képest jóval lazább hangvételt kapott, ami előfordulhat, egyeseknek kicsit komolytalannak, súlytalannak hat. Másoknak viszont lehet, hogy pont emiatt fog tetszeni, mivel sokszor a klasszikusokat idézi.

A Back to Basics megszületésénél két illusztrátor is közreműködött, az egyik a főként az Image Comics alkalmazásában tevékenykedő Ryan Ottley, a másik pedig Humberto Ramos, aki már korábban is dolgozott Pókember képregényeken. A két művész közötti váltás csak a nagyon sasszeműeknek tűnik fel, vagy maximum akkor, ha kimondottan ezeket keressük. Az eredmény pont olyan, mint amit az Amazing Spider-Man esetében elvárunk, sem több, sem kevesebb: Színes, laza, ugyanakkor igényes és részletes. 

Az Amazing Spider-Man: Back to Basics egy nagyszerű, könnyed olvasmány, melynek varázsa pont abban rejlik, hogy nem veszi magát komolyabban a kelleténél. Poénos, váratlan helyzetekkel teli, minden Pókember rajongónak erősen ajánlott.

In 2018 The Amazing Spider-Man got a new writer, like most of the publisher’s other comics. This is Marvel’s Fresh Start.

Dan Slott had a huge impact on the world of Peter Parker. His decade long Spider-Man run is the longest in the franchise, which contains various titles. During that time there were traditional stories as well as some crazy ideas. Slott served his time and moved to other comics, like The Fantastic Four and Tony Stark: Iron Man, but don’t worry! Nick Spencer took the mantle of writing the Amazing Spider-Man.

Seeing the cover made me smile, since it features classic adversaries, like Rhino, Mysterio, Lizardman and Kraven, the Hunter. The title is a bit misleading, because „Back to the Basics” is more like „Turn Peter Parker’s Life Upside Down Even Than Usual”.

Peter knows the feeling of loss. He lost his parents, his uncle and his girlfriend too. But this time he lost something, that can break his entire career: The respect of his colleagues and his honor in the world of science. Then he not just have to take on the bad guys of New York, but also himself. Literally! And if this isn’t enough, Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin is the legitimate mayor of the city. What the hell is going on!?

Back to Basics is the sequel to Slott’s Superior Spider-Man, where Dr. Octopus took over Peter’s body and started living his life. Don’t worry! If you missed it you’ll still understand the new series, it let’s you know the important details without massively spoiling the prequels. It’s quite new reader friendly and you can also read Slott’s stuff whenever you like.

Besides the new status quo, the new Amazing-Spiderman lives up to it’s name. The never seen twists are balanced with character accuracy. Spencer cleverly puts his own story into Slott’s work, while creating something completely new. The new series got a lighter tone compared to it’s predecessor, so it might feel a bit weightless to some. But maybe that’s the reason why others will like it, it pretty much feels like the classics.

Two illustrators helped to create Back to Basics. One is Ryan Ottley, who is mostly hired by image comics, the other is Humberto Ramos, who’s not unfimilar to drawing Spider-Man. The change between them is barely visible. The outcame is exactly what you expect from the title, not more, not less: detailed, colorful, but still light and cool in style.

Amazig Spider-Man is a great, easy read, that doesn’t takes itself too serious. It’s funny, full of unexpected twists, I recommened it to all Spidey fans. You can pre-order the series to the 4th TPB from online bookstores.
