A magyar olvasók Charles Soule nevét főként Star Wars képregények révén ismerhetik, amikből van, ami nálunk is megjelent. A Darth Vader: A Sith Sötét Nagyura az utóbbi idők egyik legpozitívabb visszhangot hozó Star Wars képregénysorozata, emellett írt már Poe Dameronról, Landoról, valamint Obi-Wanról és Anakinról is. A Marvelnél 2014-től ő felelt She-Hulk, 2015-től pedig Daredevil kalandjaiért. A 2014-es megjelenésű, 4 részből álló Death of Wolverine nem titkolt célja az volt, hogy drámai módon vessen véget az adamantium karmú mutáns életének. Vajon sikerült?
Logan sebezhetővé vált, öngyógyító képessége nincs többé. Karmait is csak szörnyű sérülések árán tudja használni, sebei ráadásul könnyen el is fertőződhetnek. És ha mindez még nem lenne elég, valaki vérdíjat tűzött ki a fejére. Rozsomáknak menekülnie kell, de sehol sincs biztonságban. Átlagosnál hosszabb élete során rengeteg ellenséget szerzett, de ezúttal vajon ki akarja őt elkapni és miért?
Ha valakit esetleg érdekelnek a történet előzményei, úgy érdemes beszerezni a Wolverine: Hunting Season, valamint a Killable című Paul Cornell képregényeket is. Ezeket azonban bármikor pótolhatjuk, a Death of Wolverine önmagában is élvezhető, rendelkezésünkre bocsátja a szükséges infókat, a tie-inek sem kötelezőek.
Ha valamiért levonnék néhányat az egyébként magas pontszámból, az az, hogy a cím előre lelövi a végkimenetelt, ami így sajnos nem üt akkorát. Ez kb. olyan, mintha egy Trónok Harca epizódnak az lenne a neve, hogy „xy halála”. Hova így a meglepetés? Értem én mit akartak ezzel a készítők, de míg Supermannél, aki a reményt szimbolizálja ez tök jól működött (Death of Superman), addig Rozsomák esetében már kevésbé. Emellett azt is tudjuk, hogy a képregények világában a halál semmit nem jelent, ezt egykor maga Stan Lee is megerősítette. Egy ilyen sztorinak akkor lett volna igazán súlya, ha vagy 10 évre jegelik a karaktert, ehelyett 2018-ban, 4 év elteltével viszonylag hamar visszahozták az életbe. Viszont szó sincs arról, hogy ne örülnénk ennek, hiszen Rozsomák a legizgalmasabb Marvel karakterek egyike, mi pedig bármikor szívesen olvasunk róla. Ha kíváncsi vagy a folytatásra, akkor érdemes beszerezned a Return of Wolverine és a Hunt for Wolverine képregényeket is.
A support cast meglehetősen szegényes, célkeresztet viselni a hátunkon bizony magányos teher. Az X-ek közül egyedül Kitty Pryde (Árnymacska) tűnik fel, valamint Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) a Fantasztikus Négyesből. Ellenfelekből már inkább kijutott, viszont ha mindet megnevezném, akkor a cím mellett már túl könnyű lenne összerakni a sztorit, ez viszont továbbra is az olvasó kiváltsága, amit én igyekszek tiszteletben tartani.
Az artwork a képregény egyik legerősebb része, ami egy ilyen fontos karakter életét lezáró történetnél el is várható, még ha csak ideiglenes is. Steve McNiven nagyszerű választásnak bizonyult, akinek az első Polgárháború mellett ez az egyik legjelentősebb munkája. A borítók is igazán kreatívak, az utolsó lezáró epizódé nekem külön személyes kedvencem lett.
A Death of Wolverine ajánlott olvasmány mindenkinek, aki nem csak az X-Men tagjaként, hanem szólóban is szereti a karaktert. Az utolsó oldalak után viszont ne itassuk az egereket, hiszen mint fentebb is írtam Logan nem örökre köszönt el tőlünk, sőt - azóta már volt néhány nem kevésbé izgalmas szereplése, Gerry Duggan pedig nemrég kozmikus szintre emelte az eseményeket a jelenleg futó Wolverine: Infinity Watch lapjain. Hogy mi sül ki ebből? Fogalmam sincs! De hogy idén még hallani fogunk róla, az fix!

Darth Vader: The Dark Lord of the Sith is one of the most critically acclaimed Star Wars runs in recent memory, but he also wrote stories about Poe Dameron, Lando, Obi-Wan and Anakin. From 2014 he was responsible for the adventures of She-Hulk, and from 2015 Daredevil as well. It was no secret, that the goal of Death of Wolverine (2014) was to end the life of the adamantium clawed mutant in a dramatic way. Was it successful?
Logan became vulnerable, his healing factor is no more. Now he can only use his claws for a price of serious injuries, that can also get infected if he’s not careful. And if that’s not enough, he got a bounty on his head. Wolverine has to run, he’s not safe anywhere. He made many enemies during his abnormally long life, but who wants to get him this time and why?
If you want to learn about the events leading to Death of Wolverine you should also get Wolverine: Hunting Season and Wolverine: Killable from Paul Cornell. But you can do that anytime, Death of Wolverine is enjoyable on it’s own, it fills you in with the details, tie-ins are also optional.
I have to deduct a few points from the overall high score because the title spoils the outcome which is not going to hit you that hard enough. It’s like naming a Game of Thrones episode „The Death of XY”. Where’s the surprise? I get what the creators wanted, this worked very well with Superman, who’s the symbol of hope, but in case of Wolverine... not so much. And we also know that death means nothing in the world of comic books, even Stan Lee pointed this one out. This story could have more weight if they put the character on ice for ten years or more, but they bringed him back just four years later, which is pretty early. But we don’t mind at all, we love Wolverine, and we like to read about him as much as we can. If you’re interested in the sequels you should also get Return of Wolverine and Hunt for Wolverine.
The support cast is quite short, wearing cross-hairs on our back is a lonely burden. The comic only features Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) from the X-Men and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) from the Fantastic Four. There are many villains though, but I can’t name them all, it would be too easy to guess the plot due to the title, which is the ultimate spoiler itself. Exploring the story is still the right of the reader and I try to respect that.
The artwork is one of the strongest parts of the comic, but I think this is hardly a high expectation, when they try to end the life of such an important character, like Wolverine. Steve McNiven was the perfect choice for this, Death of Wolverine is one of his most notable works besides the first Civil War. The covers are also very creative, the last one became my personal favorite.
I recommend Death of Wolverine for everyone, who likes the character in solo, and not just as the member of the X-Men. And don’t cry once you finished the story, Wolverine is not gone forever, in fact he had some quite enjoyable comics since. Not to mention that Gerry Duggan bringed the character on a cosmic level on the pages of the ongoing Infinity Watch. Where this goes? I have no idea! But we are going to hear about it soon, that’s for sure!
