A tavaly Októberben bemutatott, Tom Hardy főszereplésével készült Venom film meglehetősen megosztotta a közönséget. Akik főként csak a mozikban találkoztak a Marvel Univerzummal kellemesen szórakoztak, akik viszont a képregények lapjairól, vagy akár csak a Pókember rajzfilmsorozatból ismerik a karaktert, azok csalódottan dobták ki a maradék pattogatott kukoricát kifelé menet. Sajnos én az utóbbi táborba tartoztam, bár ez némileg az én tájékozatlanságomnak is köszönhető. Tudtam ugyanis, hogy Pókember nem lesz benne a filmben, azt viszont nem, hogy egyáltalán semmilyen utalás nem lesz rá, mintha soha nem is létezett volna. Az eredeti origin story legfontosabb része Eddie és a szimbióta közös motivációja, ami nem más, mint a Peter Parker ellen irányuló gyűlölet. Emellett Venom is csak azután születik meg, hogy Pókember sorsára hagyja az idegen organizmust. Ezzel szemben a filmből még a karakter mellkasán díszelgő ikonikus fehér pók-szimbólum is lemaradt, bár ez volt a produkció legkisebb problémája. Úgy látszik ez most egy újfajta trend, amivel szándékosan szúrják tökön magukat a készítők, hiszen érkezik a Pókember mentes Morbius, valamint a Batman mentes Joker is. Mondanom sem kell, hogy egyikhez sem fűzök különösebb reményeket.
A film premierjénél korábban, Júliusban startolt el Donny Cates Venom képregénysorozata, amit mind az olvasó közönség, mind a kritikusok is a 2018-as év egyik legjobb Marvel képregényének választottak. Az író nevéhez fűződik a hamarosan magyarul is megjelenő Thanos Győz, a Cosmic Ghost Rider, a Venom mellett pedig a jelenleg futó Galaxis Őrzői sorozat borítóin is az ő neve díszeleg. A Venom első hat számát tartalmazó TPB Decemberben jelent meg.
Eddie Brock szörnyű lidércnyomásból ébred. Egy számára ismeretlen nyelven álmodott, egy olyan helyről és időről, ahol még sosem járt. Az egésznek semmi értelme. Majd tudatosul benne, hogy ez nem is az ő álma... Hanem a szimbiótáé. A szimbiótáé, aki fél. De mégis mi lehet az, amitől még ő is ennyire retteg?
A sztori az első pillanattól kezdve generál egy egyedi, nyomasztó hangulatot, ami borzongásra készteti az olvasót, és ami egyértelműen a képregény egyik sajátossága.
Az új antagonista, Knull csak még inkább rátesz erre egy lapáttal dacára annak, hogy szimbolikus volta miatt egy kevésbé tapasztalt író kezében valószínűleg kissé elcsépeltnek hatna (fény és sötétség, élet és üresség szembeállítása). A történet húzóereje nem is maga a cselekmény, hanem sokkal inkább az Eddie és a szimbióta közötti intim kapcsolat, amit Catesnek sikerült nagyszerűen kihangsúlyoznia. Az amúgy is meglehetősen kurta, két főt számláló support cast egyetlen szélesebb körben ismert tagja Miles Morales, mellette pedig megismerjük Rex Stricklandet, akire a cím utal és akiről a szeptemberben megjelenő Venom Unleashed képregényben többet is megtudhatunk.
Ryan Stegman sokat hozzáadott a sötét atmoszférához. Az illusztrátor korábban olyan Pókember képregényeken is dolgozott, mint a Renew Your Vows, a Venom Inc., valamint a Superior Spider-Man sorozat. Épp ezért Venom egyáltalán nem ismeretlen számára, már korábban is készített rajzokat a karakterről. A képregény legtöbbet használt színe a narancssárga, ami a sötét tónusokkal vegyítve meglehetősen lehangoló, apokaliptikus hangulatot kelt, ez pedig kiválóan illik a koncepcióhoz. Mindez Frank Martin színező érdeme.
A Donny Cates féle Venom tényleg az egyik legjobb jelenleg is futó Marvel képregénysorozat, ráadásul az okosan lógva hagyott befejezésnek köszönhetően mind a tíz körmömet le fogom rágni a második rész érkezéséig. Erre viszont szerencsére nem kell sokat várni, hiszen Eddie Brock kalandjai Május 7-én folytatódnak a „The Abyss” című TPB-ben.

The Venom movie with Tom Hardy premiered in last October got quite mixed reviews. Those who mostly know the Marvel Universe from the movie theatres enjoyed it, but fans who are more familiar with the character due to comics or animated shows were let down. Sadly I was the latter. However, the fact that I was poorly informed also played a part in my disappointment. I knew that Spider-Man was not going to be in the movie, but I didn’t know there also won’t be any references to him, like he never even existed. The most important part of the original origin story is that Eddie and the symbiote shared a motive, which was their hatred towards Peter Parker. Not to mention that Venom was born only after Spider-Man rejected the alien organism. Instead the creators even left out the iconic white spider symbol, but this was the least of the problems of the movie. It seems kicking yourself in the balls is the new trend in Hollywood, since we know the Morbius movie is also in development without Spider-Man, and the Joker is also coming without Batman. Needles to say I don’t expect much from either of these productions.
A bit earlier than the movie, Marvel launched their Venom series in July. The new comics from Donny Cates were praised by both fans and critics as one of the publishers best run of 2018. The author is also known for Thanos Wins, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and he also writes the ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy series. The TPB that collects the first six issues of Venom was released in December.
Eddie Brock wakes up from a terrible nightmare. He was dreaming in a language he doesn’t know, and was in a place and time where he has never been. It doesn’t make any sense. Then he realizes the nightmare is not his. It’s the symbiote’s. And the symbiote is scared. But what can it be that even makes the alien organism terrified?
The story creates a unique, depressing vibe from the beginning, that you can’t get from any other comic. The new antagonist, Knull makes it even creepier. However, he is quite a symbolic villain that could have ended up a bit corny in the hands of a less experienced writer (darkness set against light, life set against emptiness). The real strenght of the comic is not even the story, it’s the intimate relationship between Eddie and the symbiote, which was really nailed by Cates. The support cast is quite short and only one of it’s two members is better known. He is Miles Morales, and we also meet Rex Strickland, who’s name the comic refer in it’s title. We can learn more about him in the Venom: Unleashed TPB in September.
Ryan Stegman also played a huge part in the creation of the dark atmosphere.
The illustrator worked on Spider-Man titles before, such as Renew your Vows, Superior Spider-Man, and Venom Inc., so he’s not unfamiliar with drawing Venom. The mostly used color of the comic is orange, which mixed with the darker tones gave the panels a very depressing, apocalyptic vibe, which really suits the story. Venom by Donny Cates is indeed one of the best ongoing Marvel titles. Due to the clever open ending I’m going to go nuts until I get the next volume. Luckily it’s very close, the adventure of Eddie Brock continues in the TPB called „Abyss” released on the 7th of May.
