Secret Six Vol 2: Money for Murder by Gail Simone

Saját képregényének, a Tranquility-nek egyik karakterét, Thomasina Lindot a legjobb női karakternek választották 2009-ben.

"Every superhero story is the same", vagyis minden szuperhős történet ugyanaz.
A szuperhősök jelen esetben mellékes szereplői a történetnek, helyettük viszont itt van a leghalálosabb gonosztevőkből álló zsoldos csapat, akiknek egyébként megvan a saját becsületkódexük.

A Hatos vezetője a halhatatlan hódító, Vandal Savage lánya, Scandal.

A köztes Debt of Significant Blood című epizódban a Batman nélkül maradt Gothamben erednek képzett emberrablók nyomába, akik ráadásul gyerekekre utaznak...

A Money for Murder elolvasása után érdemes egyből megnézni a Hell to Payt, mivel rengeteg a párhuzam a két sztoriban, még szereplők tekintetében is.

A cikk folytatása hamarosan érkezik, amiben a következő Cat's Cradle című részt is nagyító alá vesszük.

There are many comics that I wanted to read earlier, but they are out of print. These series are very hard to find, or sold at a ridiculous price. This was one of the main reasons that I got a tablet recently. I was against it for quite a while, but I discovered that it's actually very comfortable to read on this device, and the prices are also very friendly. You can get many stuff on Comixology, that you can't buy in physical form anymore, and they usually cost less than paper. This will definitely affect the future of the blog, but I'll try to find a healthy balance between digital and printed comics. The first thing I bought was Secret Six from Gail Simone, which I saw being praised a lot by more experienced readers, and I couldn't have choose anything better.

Gail Simone is one of the best female comic book writers, she has won many awards during her career. Thomasina Lindo from Tranquility, who was created by Simone was voted to be the best female character of 2009.The writer is also known for her open minded views, she was acknowledged may times for her portrayals on LGBT characters. She also was the longest running female writer of Wonder Woman, and she's also known for the other girl power DC comic, Birds of Prey. Secret Six is one of her most notable works. Why? You'll find out soon!

"Every superhero story is the same". I can't describe how much it hurts, when someone says this. Like twisting a knife in my heart. For whoever ever said this, I'd like to recommend Secret Six for you, since superheroes are minor characters in this comic. You get the deadliest mercenary group of villains instead, who live by their own code. Although if they have to choose between the job or doing the right thing, that might turn them against each other. What's the main difference between the Secret Six and the Suicide Squad? The Secret Six doesn't have to worry if they get their head blown off or not. They are here of their own will, and to get the prize for their completed tasks. And because the are good at it. They couldn't do anything else, even if they wanted to.

Money for Murder follows the events of the Villains United miniseries from 2006. If you didn't read that one, you'll still catch up easily. The leader of the Six is the daughter of the immortal conqueror, Vandal Savage. Her name is Scandal. Deadshot, who's the best shooter of the world is also part of this group besides Suicide Squad. There's also Catman, Ragdoll, Bane, who joined the Six recently, and Jeanette (Banshee) joins them too as you make progress in the story.

In Money for Murder we follow the Six on two tasks, and one mission which is off the books. In the episode called Unhinged they race for a mysterious card, which is worth all the money and human life. In Depths they escort a package from A to B, but they don't know anything about it's containment, or their clients, who also travel with them. Soon they discover something so awfully wrong, that even these well experienced bad guys stomach can't take it in. In Debts of Significant Blood, Batman does not protect Gotham anymore. Meanwhile, some members of the Six get after a group of professional kidnappers, who are targeting children for ransom.

I think I don't spoil too much, if I tell that the card from Unhinged is the same card you can see in the R rated Suicide Squad animated movie, Hell to Pay. There's a simple sentence written on the card: "Get out of hell free". This is literally what it's for. If you have the card in the moment you die, you get automatically to heaven. No matter what terrible things you did in your life, the card will grant your absolvement. Even if it's Hitler, Charles Manson, or a child molester pedophile, it doesn't matter, until they have the card. It's no surprise, that every bad guy wants it. I recommend to watch Hell to Pay right after you read Money for Murder, the two stories share a lot in common, as well as characters.

The relationship between Bane and Scandal is one of the best things in the comic, they are the most decent members of the team. The prior is trying to replace the father figure in the life of the latter, without any selfish intentions. Vandal Savage might has an increased intelligence, but emotionally he is still on the level of a caveman, which did more bad than good to her daughter. It's no wonder why she is more into women. We also learn more about Bane's Venom addiction, the past of Catman, the romance between Deadshot and Jeanette, and everything sounds disgusting and perverted from the mouth of Ragdoll. Simone used these characters very well, who are also interesting on their own, but they are even more interesting together.

The artist, Nicola Scott worked together with Simone many times on Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey among other things. The fact that this brutal comic is the creation of two women just makes it even cooler. If I see their names on any cover I won't hesitate long to buy it or not.

Secret Six is a very underrated comic series, and the sad part is that it's underrated by DC themselves. I have no other reasonable explanation why it's not in print anymore, I hope someday it get's the attention it deserves. I'm sure fans would be happy to see a reboot, but as far as I know, there are no such plans by the publisher. Next time we are going to explore Cat's Cradle, the next volume of the series. To be continued!
